SUMMARY:NAC-ISSA May lunch: Investigating Foreign Tech from Online Retailers
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a chapter sponsored lunch with Michael Portera presenting Investigating Foreign Tech from Online Retailers \n\n\n\nWe live in a time where we can buy practically anything online. It’s very tempting to buy cheap products online\, including electronics. While saving money can be great\, what are we really getting here? Where did it really come from\, is it safe to use\, and what is really going on behind the scenes? Let’s find out! \n\n\n\nIn this talk\, we’ll track the supply chain of a foreign smartwatch on Amazon using various OSINT techniques. After going down the rabbit hole\, we’ll perform a hardware/software breakdown with automated and manual analyses (and further OSINT based on our findings). By the end of the talk\, you will have a better understanding of some of the tools and processes you can use for performing your own due diligence. \n\n\n\nLunch will be a Ted’s BBQ Potato Bar and our door prize this month is an ASUS Chromebook.

SUMMARY:DC256 Meetup: Delivering RF-Triggered Cyber Effects
DESCRIPTION:As platforms become increasingly networked and reliant on embedded systems\, adversaries are exploring new methods to deliver cyber effects—without ever touching the internet. This session explores the evolving threat of Cyber-Electromagnetic Convergence (CEWC)\, where RF signals are used to deliver or trigger malicious code\, disrupt bus protocols\, or manipulate system behavior. With real-world use cases targeting embedded systems\, attendees will learn how SDRs\, AI-driven waveform fuzzing\, and data bus injection techniques (e.g.\, CAN\, MIL-STD-1553) can emulate insider\, near-sider\, and outsider threat models. The talk will also examine key performance parameters and current technology gaps\, offering a roadmap for integrating CEWC realism into testing campaigns. \n\n\n\nTalk Title: Silent Intrusion – Delivering RF-Triggered Cyber Effects🔍 Topics Covered:• Cyber-Electromagnetic Convergence (CEWC)• AI-driven SDR waveform fuzzing• Data bus injection: CAN & MIL-STD-1553• Insider vs outsider threat modeling• Real-world case studies• Technology gaps in CEWC testingThis is a must-attend session for those in embedded systems\, RF\, cybersecurity testing\, or red / blue teaming.Note: This event is hosted by DC256 and is not a NAC-ISSA sponsored event. \n\n\n\nFor event details and to register: \n\n\n\nhttps://www.linkedin.com/events/dc256meetup-deliveringrf-trigge7335487754035769344/about

SUMMARY:Guidepoint sponsors NAC-ISSA August 2025 lunch
DESCRIPTION:Join NAC-ISSA as Guidepoint and Asimily (https://asimily.com) sponsor our August chapter lunch. \n\n\n\nBest of Both Worlds: Strategies to Break Down IT/OT Security Silos and Accelerate Innovation \n\n\n\nIT and OT were never meant to be the same\, but managing them in traditional silos\, while thought to be important to reducing the attack surface\, is holding organizations back. With digital initiatives like AI and industrial automation fueling demand for new and connected digital systems on the plant floor\, OT leaders face mounting pressure to enable innovation without compromising security\, safety or uptime. But OT Security programs often stall when the competing requirements of IT\, OT\, Engineering\, and management teams collide causing project delays\, increasing the risk of vulnerable systems\, and production downtime.  If the right tools and strategies are applied\, IT/OT silos can be removed\, reducing risk\, improving collaboration between IT\, OT and the business and accelerating innovation.  \n\n\n\nPresenter: Oren Niskin (https://www.linkedin.com/in/orenniskin/) is a Senior Security Engineer in the OT Security Practice at Guidepoint Security. Oren has been in the Operational Technology (OT) field for more than 20 years. Starting in the Nuclear Reactor Department of a US Navy aircraft carrier\, Oren has maintained industrial control systems aboard oil rigs\, managed the OT cybersecurity program for a global drilling contractor\, and successfully guided a wide array of manufacturing and utility organizations as an OT security consultant. Oren holds a Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering Technology from Thomas Edison University and a Master of Science in Information Security Engineering (MSISE) from the renowned SANS Technical Institute. \n\n\n\nWe will be back at our usual haunt at The Auburn University Research and Innovation Center in Research Park. Catering will be Rosie’s Mexican Restaurant and the door prize is a Linksys AC-1750 dual-band Wifi 5 Router.

DESCRIPTION:Join NAC-ISSA with speaker Scott Ross for our September 2025 Chapter lunch. He will be speaking on Securing the Bioeconomy. \n\n\n\nWiz had a schedule conflict and is unable to provide a speaker for the chapter lunch. We hope they will be able to join us at a future event. \n\n\n\nThank you to Scott Ross of the Hudson Alpha Institute for stepping on short notice. \n\n\n\nSecuring the Bioeconomy \n\n\n\nAs the bioeconomy grows\, encompassing biotechnology research\, agricultural innovation\, pharmaceuticals\, and healthcare integration\, it faces an expanding array of cybersecurity threats. These risks go beyond traditional IT concerns\, targeting sensitive human data\, genomic information\, intellectual property\, and complex supply chains critical to food security and global health. \n\n\n\nThis session will examine the unique cybersecurity challenges within the bioeconomy. Topics will include threats to human privacy\, vulnerabilities in biotechnology development pipelines\, risks to agricultural and bio-manufacturing supply chains\, and the protection of large-scale genomic datasets. \n\n\n\nThe presentation will also highlight emerging approaches to biocybersecurity\, featuring work done in collaboration with NIST NCCoE and UAH CCRE to develop specialized cybersecurity frameworks and threat models. These efforts include the creation of Indicators-of-Behavior (IoB) to detect and mitigate attacks on research institutions\, bio-pharma operations\, and biotechnology campuses integrating with healthcare systems. \n\n\n\nScott Ross is a leading technology and cybersecurity expert in Alabama. Growing up in Huntsville\, he developed early computer skills and began working in the field as a teen. After earning a Bachelor of Information Systems Management from Auburn University\, he returned to Huntsville in 2010. His career started in the defense industry with the Army Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC) and Army Material Command (AMC)\, where he quickly became a key advisor. In 2012\, Scott transitioned to Parsons Corporation\, leading IT Operations and Cybersecurity teams across various sectors. By 2019\, he became the Director of IT at the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology\, addressing cybersecurity challenges in genomics. He received the 2021 InspireCIO Orbie award for Alabama CIO of the Year for Nonprofit/Public Sector Finalists. Scott holds a CISSP certification and is a principal investigator on genomic data cybersecurity research with UAH CCRE and NIST NCCOE.
